At 15, whilst all of Jamie's school friends had the weekends to themselves, Jamie took on a Saturday job at his local estate agent as an Office Junior. This, as it happens, turned out to be the first chapter of a very successful career. As soon as school was over, at the age of 16, Jamie applied for two estate agents positions and both companies battled against each other to offer him a position at their company. He took the highest salary at the time: £3,500 per annum!
After two years of working in estate agency and working his way up (with now a bigger salary), he decided to change career and become a recruitment consultant for the property industry. This is where Jamie got to know everyone within the industry and understand exactly how to make it up the property ladder. During his years in recruitment, Jamie excelled with the best results (setting company records) and earned significant bonuses.
Thanks to this and a convincing business plan presented to the banks, at the age of 20, Jamie bought his first property and, at 22, rented this out and bought his second property, both located in East London. By this time, Jamie was now manager of a recruitment consultancy but something was missing so he decided to go back into property, but this time property investment, working with larger budgets.
After 18 months working for a real estate investment firm in central London, developing strong relationships with both his clients and property developers, Jamie saw the potential to start his own business and reap the rewards that he deserved.
So, at just 24, Jamie invested £20,000 (no bank loans!) and started his own business - determined to make it work! Jamie's first year was amazing and, in just under 2.5 years, turned over £1m. To date, Jamie has never borrowed money to make a business work.
Jamie is very proud of his achievements and is totally self-made. To find out more about Jamie, for one-to-one training/consultations; or public speaking: please contact us.
The Apprentice, in Jamie's words...
The Apprentice! Well, where do I start? First and foremost, I loved every second of it and would definitely do it all over again! I love to be pushed and there is no better way to explore all your talents than to work on The Apprentice.
The tasks were set to challenge you from the start and ranged from making and selling sausages to creating a unique beach accessory; and then pitching this to blue-chip organisations. Other tasks included selling crisps to the German market and creating a marketing campaign for a new multi-purpose cleaning product (I told you they were varied!) but my most favourite tasks were the inventor task (choose an invention and sell to trade), the buying task (buying 10 items in a day for the cheapest price) and our tourism task (to run a London tour company for a day).
These tasks enabled me to demonstrate a whole range of skills including people management, adapting/working with strong personalities, negotiating (buying and selling - both very different), one-to-one communication, and most importantly doing all of this under immense pressure, so keeping cool!
The final boardroom was a showdown between myself, Stella English and Chris Bates. Stella was put through to the final and with the final job in mind, Lord Sugar decided to regrettably let me go.
I went into the process promising myself to sell like I was selling for my own company, buy like I was buying for myself and treat everyone like I treated people in the real world - and I think it did me well to keep to my values.
This is just a snippet of my experience with The Apprentice, if you want to find out more, or want me to talk publicly, please feel free to contact me.
